Summer sounds fill the library
On Tuesday night the Rockridge branch welcomed a cellist from the Oakland Symphony for an instrument "petting zoo" event. The professional musician was joined by two high school music students on violin and flute.
The trio played a few short pieces and introduced the four families of symphony instruments: woodwinds, strings, percussion and brass. The musicians explained how each family creates sound from vibrations in it's own way.
Some volunteers from the audience were bold enough to try out their conducting skills in front of the group.
After the performance, the 60 children in attendance were able to try a variety of instruments from each of the four families.
Discovery events like this one are part of the Oakland Public Library's Summer Reading Program. There is still time for adults and children participate in summer reading activities by visiting a branch or registering online.
